Have you ever wished for the tranquil sensation of warm water in your shower, only to be met with a frigid cold stream instead? We’ve all been there. Blown-out pilot lights on water heaters are quite prevalent problems that plumbers encounter regularly. These issues often occur due to drafts passing through the area or inadequate insulation and open windows extinguishing the flame from the pilot light. But don’t worry – Springboro Plumbing & Drain can help! We have an easy-to-follow guide to relighting your own pilot light so you can get hot water running again in no time. Don’t wait any longer – follow these simple steps and enjoy all the benefits of having warm water at home!

Are you struggling to reignite the pilot light of your water heater?

  1. To get started, locate the access panel on the side of your water heater. It may be secured with screws or latches, so delicately remove it and set it aside so you can continue working.
  1. Before reigniting your pilot light, switch off the gas supply by twisting the gas control valve to “off.” Safety is key. Additionally, you should pause for 5-10 minutes after turning it off so that any existing gas can dissipate. Don’t forget this step! Giving the previously built-up gas enough time to disperse before continuing in the process is crucial for safety reasons.
  1. Your next step requires finding the control panel. You’ll recognize it by its knob-like switch, as well as all of its related buttons and settings. Take some time to become familiar with this part of your equipment before making any alterations. Also, keep an eye out for a little red or black square button near/below the knob; it could be marked “reset” or “ignition.”
  1. After the previously built-up gas has had an appropriate time to disperse, switch the gas control valve to “pilot.”
  1. To begin, firmly press and hold down the knob. Most of these knobs function as buttons and can be pushed inward.
  1. To ignite your water heater’s pilot flame, keep pressing down on the knob and click the small black square button below it one time. All you need is a single click to get things ignited. If that doesn’t work, try clicking it one more time. This will spark your pilot flame back on.
  1. When the indicator light illuminates or blinks on, you can finally release your grip on the “pilot” button/knob.
  1. Now that your pilot light is relit, adjust the water heater to your preferred temperature setting.
  1. Ensure that you turn the gas supply back on.
  1. Before wrapping up, confirm that all screws or latches are securely fastened and that the access panel is restored to its original position.

It is essential to bear in mind that even if your gas water heater features an electronic ignition system, it should still come with a backup pilot light just in case the electronic components malfunction. As such, you can always manually ignite the burner using a match or lighter and activate the reserve pilot light when needed. Keep this tip handy – it might help you out of tricky situations!

By carefully following these simple steps, you can safely and effortlessly relight your pilot light. As long as the proper precautions are taken, you’ll be able to bask in the warmth of your home without having to worry about potential problems or dangers. With just a few minutes of effort and attention to detail, soon enough you will have restored heating and comfort back into your living space!
